What:

The MISSION is simple:

Close the achievement gap.

To promote literacy and increase academic success by placing new books into the hands and homes of low-income and underserved children.

To avoid duplicating efforts and partner with organizations that are already doing good work thereby enhancing their programs and our reach.

To read to and with children to share the joy of the magic of books.

To model reading for the parents and caregivers and make them part of the solution.

To provide a holistic approach to literacy by bringing multiple programs to the children.

WHY:

  • Academically, children growing up in homes with no books are on average three years behind children in homes with lots of books.

  • The achievement gap can be narrowed or even closed simply by giving books to these underserved children.*

  • Kids with access to their own books have significantly higher reading scores than the children without books.*

  • In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to kids is one for every 300 children.

  • Multiple studies have shown that ‘high interest in reading’ triples among children who received new books.*

  • More than 70% of children who receive books report increased reading at home.*

  • Research shows that reading aloud with children is the single most important thing you can do to prepare a child for reading and learning.*

  • 82% of prison inmates are high school dropouts; most read at the lowest literacy level.*

  • 1/2 the people who are functionally illiterate are unemployed.*

  • 3 out 4 Food Stamp recipients read at the lowest literacy level.*
